Archer, in short

recorded for this site, not from the exportthe exact formulas ›

Range is the whole class: you kill things that never get to swing at you, and the skills that matter are the ones that add reach and criticals.

What it brings3

  • Double Shot fires two arrows for 120% each, and its own tooltip says they go to "up to 2 enemies".
  • Critical Shot is +20% critical rate and +15% critical damage.
  • Focus is +20 accuracy and +25 evasion for five minutes, and accuracy is what an archer is short of.

Watch out for4

  • Arrows cost mesos and there is no Soul Arrow until 2nd job. Buy the cheap ones and keep a stack.
  • Focus does not open until The Eye of Amazon is at 3, so there is a three-point toll before the buff you want.
  • Power Knockback is the skill this order leaves out.
  • These twenty points go to Double Shot because two targets beat one most of the time, and that is a judgement rather than a fact: Arrow Blow is 240% to Double Shot’s 120% against a single monster.

Where the points go

  • DEXmainDEX is damage and accuracy together; STR is the secondary the damage formula reads next.
  • STRsecondThe second term the damage formula reads after DEX, and what most bows and crossbows ask for before they will let you hold them - up to 70 STR at level 70. Enough to meet the weapon and no more.
  • never comes back, and what catches people is the requirement on the weapon rather than the damage: the Gear tab prices every rung.

Every Archer skill

iHow to read a skill card

The line under each name is what the skill does at its last rank, read off the row. max N beside the name holds that against what a single point buys, which is the argument for spending the rest of them.

Anywhere on a card opens it, for every rank, its reach and what it rolls. Words like rank, mastery or booster are underlined wherever they are used and carry their own explanation.

61points earned, level 10–30105ranks the 6 skills hold44ranks you cannot afford

You cannot max everything, and nothing in the game says so. For an order to spend them in, take one somebody has played.

Archer builds ›
iHow the bill is worked out

One point at the advancement and three a level, until level 30 stops this pool filling. The ranks are every rank the 6 skills hold between them, which is why the two numbers are not the same one counted twice.

Choosing what to leave out is the whole of building this class. The builds page is where somebody else's choice is written down, with the levels they made it at.

Damage3
iWhat "Damage" groups together

The tooltip states a damage or healing number. Mostly these are what you press to kill things; one or two are buffs that add damage rather than deal it, which is why the heading says damage and not attacks.

Becoming an Archer

  1. 1

    Reach level 10.

There is no quest to accept and nothing to prepare. Every branch opens at the same level, and until you get there the advisor has nothing to say to you.

The level is not a column on anything - it is in the game's own words. Rain's fifth Maple Island quiz says warriors, thieves, bowmen and magicians "all need to be at least level 10 to advance".

  2. 2

Go to Henesys and talk to Athena Pierce.

They stand in Bowman Instructional School, a short walk from Henesys itself. Say yes when they ask, and you are an Archer.

The advancement is not a quest in this export, so there is no quest page for it. What the export does carry is where this NPC stands, which is the map beside this step, and the level 30 chain the same person runs later, on the 2nd job pages.

You have twenty levels as an Archer before the next decision. The first tab is what to do with them: the points, the order and every skill they buy.

The weapon ladder
iHow the ladder was built

Every weapon the class can hold, with everything that is not an upgrade removed: a rung is a weapon that beats anything you could already be carrying at its level, so “gain” is what it adds over the rung above it. Sidegrades and later weaker weapons are left out and the item browser still has them. The ladder starts from level 1 on purpose - the rungs below your level are the ones you arrived holding.

Best armour for DEX, by slot
iHow these were picked

The highest DEX in each slot a Bowman can wear, then attack, then defence.

Nothing is left out for being low level, because armour does not stop being wearable: the best piece in several of these slots wants half the level of the worst, and the level on each row is when you can put it on.

Where the game ships one piece as a male and a female version, both are named and the numbers are the same either way.
