Questions about this page

What is this page?

It is the MapleStory game client, opened up and made browsable. Everything here was decoded straight out of the client's own data files: the monsters, items, skills, maps, NPCs and quests with every number the game stores about them, the sprites and animations, the sound effects, and the text.

How is it different from the rest of the site?

The other pages read the same files and then explain them: a monster page turns raw numbers into how long something takes to kill and what it drops. This page does none of that. It shows the files as they are, with nothing added, joined, tidied or corrected, so it is the place to check when a number somewhere else looks wrong.

Where the two disagree, this page is what the client says and the rest of the site is our reading of it.

What is the dropdown at the top for?

It picks which build of the game client you are looking at. The page opens on the one the rest of this site treats as current, the live game's Public Release client. Older builds, such as the Closed Online Test 2 (CoT2) client, stay in the list, and each one says what it is in a line under the dropdown while it is open. Every build was extracted separately and is browsable on its own, so you can see what a patch changed by opening the same record in two of them.

Why do the sprites move at the right speed?

Every animation is played back using the client's own per-frame timings, in milliseconds, rather than at a guessed frame rate. You can pause one, step through it frame by frame, slow it to a tenth speed, and change the background behind it to see the edges of the artwork.

Is any of it edited or filled in?

No. Nothing on this page is written by hand, corrected or borrowed from another source. If a field is blank, the client left it blank. That is the one guarantee this page makes and the reason it is worth having.

Can I use it to look things up the other pages do not show?

Yes, and that is mostly what it is for. The reference pages show the fields worth putting in a table; the client stores far more than that, and all of it is here, including the raw archive tree itself if you want to see where a value physically lives.
