MapleStory Classic World housing: a home of your own

8 min read
Can I have a home of my own, and what goes in it?
iWhat Housing: a home of your own is
Nothing in the original game let a player own a room. The Public Release sets one up in each citizenship town: a gold door on the town map, a registrar beside it, and 61 things the client says go inside. This page reads all of it out of the files, and says plainly where the files stop, because the rules for getting a home are the server’s.

The short answer

Henesys and Kerning City each have a home, behind a gold door beside the town’s Housing Registrar. The client carries 61 pieces to put in one, every one of them new since Closed Online Test 2: 52 pieces of furniture, 2 storage chests, 6 crafting stations and a training dummy. How you get a home, and what it costs, is not in the files.

iWhere this page's numbers come from
Built from items.json, maps.json, portals.json, crafting.json, data/cot2/. Nothing on this page is written from memory, and where a number comes from somewhere other than the client’s own files it says so beside itself.

CoT2: From Closed Online Test 2 (Beta 2). Not in the Public Release; kept here as a record.Closed Online Test 2 already had this room, furnished, behind a hidden door under the door’s own id: Yellow Mushroom House, kept here as a record.

The gold door is the client’s MapHelper portal pv/2, new in the Public Release, and only the two house doors use it. Each opens a field the client builds from a template rather than a map it ships, the way it builds a party quest’s stages, with room for 1,000 copies where a party quest has 100. One copy per owner is the natural reading; the client does not say so.

The parts are the client’s own function lines; the export names an NPC and nothing else. The estate agents, the furnishing shops and the registrars were already standing in Closed Online Test 2, with the same lines; the Henesys agent’s is “Owning your very own home here doesn’t have to be just a dream anymore!” The doorbells, the mailboxes and the storage are new. The mailboxes and the storage stand on no map at all, which fits their being placed inside a home, though the client does not say where they go.

Henesys furniture · 26

Kerning City furniture · 26

The two sets are the two halves of the furniture’s id block, each named for the town whose table and flag it holds. The split is the block’s, not a rule: the Henesys half has a steel milk can and the Kerning City half a rustic bed. What each piece does is read from its own description, and every piece says it can be placed in your home.

Storage, crafting and a training dummy

Storage 2

The client also has the Rusty Safe and the Reinforced Safe as storage NPCs, tied to Kerning City, with no item that places them in this build.

Crafting stations 6

One for each of the 6 crafting disciplines. Each icon is a small copy of the town station of its kind, and in the Public Release those stand on 5 maps, so a home with all 6 saves the walk between them.

Training 1

“Attacked freely” is everything the client says. Whether a hit shows damage, gives EXP or drops anything is not in the files.

Getting home

“Returns you to your warm and cozy home.” Every other return scroll in the client names its town, or the nearest one, and this one names none, so where it lands is decided when it is used, which fits a home that is yours rather than a town’s. Its cooldown field reads 3,600, an hour if the unit is seconds, beside an Elixir's 30.

Housing and citizenship

The client's home badge: a house under a moon, in a ring of flowers

The client ties homes to citizenship more than once, and never says how. The two homes are in the two citizenship towns, and each door carries its town’s citizenship number (1 for Henesys, 2 for Kerning City). The home chests and safes carry the same town field as the towns’ own Storage Keepers, Mr. Lee in Henesys and Mr. Hong in Kerning City. And the badge here is the client’s citizenship effect for getting a home, CitizenshipHomeGet, with a sound of the same name.

Whether a home needs citizenship, or a grade of it, is the server’s to decide and is not in the files.

What the files do not say

  • What a home costs, and how you get one. The registrars’ and the agents’ scripts run on the server. The client has no rent, deposit or price for a home anywhere.
  • How many homes there are. Room for 1,000 copies of each is a capacity, not a count of owners.
  • Whether housing is switched on. The client carries every piece, and Nexon’s Founder’s Access notes do not mention homes.
  • Where the furniture comes from. No recipe, quest reward or Cash Shop line names a single piece, and the only line recorded at a furnishing shop is the town’s Resident’s Chair, from Closed Online Test 2. The price on each card is what an NPC pays you for it.
  • What home storage holds, and whether it is the town storage or a box of its own.
  • What a doorbell does. Its name and its place beside the door suggest calling on someone else’s home.

A few things are hints and only hints. The client’s sounds include placing, flipping and removing a piece, which suggests a placement mode that can mirror furniture. Its Spanish interface strings, the only language the window’s text survives in, describe a home-management window whose door can be Locked or take a Password, and where pets can be left to roam freely. The window itself is not in the extracted client.

Questions

Where are the homes in MapleStory Classic World?

There are two, one in each citizenship town: the Yellow Mushroom House in Henesys and the Backalley Semi-Basement in Kerning City. Each is behind a gold door on the town map, with the town’s Housing Registrar beside it.

How many pieces of furniture are there?

61 items say they can be placed in a home: 52 pieces of furniture in a Henesys set of 26 and a Kerning City set of 26, 2 storage chests, 6 crafting stations and a training dummy. 22 of them do something when you stand next to them.

Can furniture be crafted or bought?

Not that the files show. No crafting recipe and no quest reward names a single piece, and none is a Cash Shop line. The only line recorded at a furnishing shop is the town’s Resident’s Chair, from Closed Online Test 2, and the price on each piece is what an NPC pays you for it, not what it costs.

Who are the housing registrars?

Bianca in Henesys and Scarlett in Kerning City, as the client names their part. The estate agents are Tommy in Henesys and Jack in Kerning City. What any of them say or ask for runs on the server.

How do I get a home?

The client does not say. The registrars’ and estate agents’ scripts run on the server, the client carries no rent, deposit or price for a home anywhere, and Nexon’s Founder’s Access release notes do not mention homes. This page will say how once it is known from the game rather than guessed.

The Founder’s Access notes

Do I need citizenship for a home?

The files tie homes to citizenship without saying how: the homes are in Henesys and Kerning City, the citizenship towns, each door carries its town’s citizenship number, and the home storage carries the same town field as the town’s Storage Keeper. Whether a home needs citizenship, or a grade of it, is the server’s to decide.
