MapleStory Quest

Which monsters can the attack reach?

Hit detection

The hidden boxes an attack searches with, which monsters it picks when too many are in range, and which attacks a wall stops.
About this page

The skill boxes here are the client’s own, per rank. A monster’s box is not in this site’s data yet, so the diagrams and the explorer use each monster’s still frame in its place. The character is one of the site’s recorded figures, drawn by maplestory.io rather than the client, there for scale.

The formulas were reverse engineered from the Public Release client by the players credited on each section, and published on the OSMS data explorer. The numbers they run on here (skill levels, monster stats, map footholds) come out of the client’s own data files, read by this site’s extractor.

Where the release changed something Closed Online Test 2 did, both are shown. Older versions of the game worked differently again, so a number remembered from somewhere else may not apply.

How an attack picks its targets

Every attack runs the same checks before a single damage number shows up, and none of them look at the art. Your sword, the arrow and the monster’s sprite are for show. What counts are two hidden boxes.

1The two boxes

→ put in the attack’s priority order
→ cut at its target count, 15 at most
→ minus anyone terrain hides, for attacks that check
The five steps of an attack
StepWhat the game does
1Build the boxA box, a 1 px line or a widening cone, placed from the point at your feet. Turn around and it turns with you.
2Find overlapsAny monster whose box shares some area with it is a candidate. Edges touching is not enough, and sprites never count.
3Priority and capCandidates go in order and the list is cut at the skill’s target count. Never more than 15.
4TerrainBasic ranged attacks and projectile skills throw out anyone a wall or platform hides. The slot is not refilled.
5Play the attackDamage lines, arrows and effects go to the finished list. Nothing looks for a new target mid-swing.
  • The white cross in every diagram is that point at your feet. The client measures every box from it, x to the right and y down.
  • The rules were read out of the release client and published on the OSMS data explorer. The skill boxes drawn here are this site’s own read of the same client.

1. Build the attack box

Five shapes cover every attack. Gold is what the attack searches, the dashed blue box is the monster.

2Five shapes

Verified
  • Your feet
  • Attack box
  • Stretched part
  • Monster box
  • Shared area
MeleeBasic swings and stabs, Power Strike
The box belongs to the swing you are doing right now, so it changes from one swing animation to the next. Weapon type picks the animations.
Slash BlastA swing that can stretch
If the first swing finds exactly one monster, the box stretches forward to 130 px from your feet (Lv 1-10) or 150 px (Lv 11-20). Same height. Find none, or two, and it stays as it was.
Basic rangedBow, crossbow and star throws with no skill
A line 1 px tall, 28 px above your feet. It starts 65 px in front of you and runs to the attack’s range. A monster’s box has to cross it.
Projectile skillsArrow Blow, Double Shot, Lucky Seven, Energy Bolt
A cone that gets taller the further out it goes. Any monster whose box reaches into it is a candidate, so far-off monsters a little above or below you still get picked.
Area skillsCentred: Thunder Bolt, Threaten. One way: Steal, Savage Blow, Rush
A fixed box out of the skill’s own data, drawn here at rank 1 from the client. A centred box reaches both sides of you. A one-way box sits in front and flips when you turn, so the Snail behind you is safe. The client stores every box for a character facing left: Steal is -180,-60 to 0,0.
  • What you see does not move the box. A longer weapon sprite, a bigger effect or a projectile that flies further changes nothing.
  • Only 7 release skills that pick monsters carry a box of their own in the client; the rest use the swing’s box, the line or the cone. All 7 are in the explorer below, and weapon reach lists every box.

2. Find overlapping monsters

A monster is a candidate when its box and the attack box share area: some width and some height at the same time.

3Shared area, not contact

Verified
shared width = min(attack.right, monster.right)
              − max(attack.left, monster.left)
shared height = min(attack.bottom, monster.bottom)
              − max(attack.top, monster.top)

candidate     = shared width > 0 and shared height > 0
Candidate. Some width and some height in common.
Not a candidate. The edges meet, 0 px shared.
Not a candidate. The sprites overlap. The boxes don’t.

  • Every monster in the release uses one or more plain rectangles. The client can read a second collision format too, and no monster uses it.
  • Being a candidate is not being hit. Priority, the target count and, for some attacks, terrain still decide.

Terrain: not checked (special targeting), so walls and platforms in between don’t matter.

Drag the monster, or click where it should stand.

The skill box is the client’s own lt/rb for that level, flipped across your feet when you face right. The monster box is a stand-in: the client tests the box on each monster frame, which this site doesn’t carry yet, so here it is the still’s own frame, stood bottom-centre on the monster’s feet. Treat a result within a few pixels of the edge as a maybe. The character is a recorded figure, drawn for scale.

3. Priority and the target cap

When more monsters are in the box than the skill can hit, the order decides who gets in. For most attacks that order is not closest first.

5Who goes first

Band of Thieves CoT2: From Closed Online Test 2 (Beta 2). Not in the Public Release; kept here as a record.Closest first. If that one is behind you, the closest one in front takes its place. With nobody in front, it keeps the first pick.
Meso Explosion CoT2: From Closed Online Test 2 (Beta 2). Not in the Public Release; kept here as a record.Goes through the mesos on the ground in object order. A drop only counts if a monster is near it, and it stops at the skill’s drop limit.
  • N is the skill’s own target count: Rush takes 6, Savage Blow 1. No release skill asks for more than 6, so the 15 only bites on Meso Explosion CoT2: From Closed Online Test 2 (Beta 2). Not in the Public Release; kept here as a record., whose count reaches 15 at rank 30.
  • Terrain comes after the cut. If a wall throws a target out, its slot stays empty, so a crowd behind a wall can eat your whole target count while the monster in the open goes untouched.

4. Check blocking terrain

Only two kinds of attack care about walls and platforms: basic ranged attacks, and skills that go out the client’s projectile route. Everything else hits through them, even when the animation looks like it flies.

6Where the check starts

Verified
  • Your feet
  • Attack box
  • Monster box
  • Terrain check
  • Blocking terrain
Basic ranged. From the target line, straight across to the monster.
Projectile skill. From your feet to the near side of the monster’s box.
  • The check line is not the arrow. It is a test the client runs once, between finding the targets and playing the attack.

7A wall in the way

Verified
Lucky Seven at a Stump on a ledge
The cone reaches the Stump, so it is a candidate. Then the check line from your feet runs into the cliff face and the Stump is dropped. Its slot stays empty.

8Platforms: shooting down, shooting up

Verified
  • Terrain check
  • Blocking terrain
  • Blocked
  • Let through
From above: dropped. The line goes down through your own platform.
From below: kept. The line comes up through the platform and out of its open top.
  • A platform blocks from above only. A line that comes up through it from underneath is let through; a line that goes down into it is stopped. Standing on a platform and shooting down at something below is stopped at your own feet.
