Before you start

Not every good training map is a good money-making map.

The best farming monsters usually have at least one of these:

  • a historically valuable rare drop
  • materials required by crafting
  • items needed by popular quests
  • equipment that is difficult to buy from NPCs
  • a very dense spawn map
  • throwing stars or other highly liquid items

This guide focuses on Victoria Island launch content.

Orbis, El Nath and 3rd Job are present in the COT2 data but are being held back from initial launch, so they are intentionally excluded from the main progression route.

Important: Classic World's drop tables are server-side. MapleStory Quest currently shows older MapleStory drop data only as a reference. The monster locations, levels and spawn counts come from the Classic World client, but historical drops may change at launch.

Understanding Value Tiers

★★★★★+ Jackpot

Potentially character-changing drops.

Examples:

  • Ilbi Throwing Stars
  • Hwabi Throwing Stars
  • excellent rare weapons
  • premium attack-related scrolls

You should usually price-check these before selling.

★★★★★ Very High

Items with strong recurring player demand:

  • Tobi / Steely
  • Black Crystal
  • Dark Crystal
  • Work Gloves
  • rare class weapons
  • highly demanded crafting components

★★★★ Good

Reliable things that may sell continuously:

  • Leather
  • Jr. Necki Skin
  • Stirge Wing
  • ores
  • quest materials
  • class equipment

The individual item may not be worth much, but stacks can be extremely liquid.

Level 10–16

Green Mushroom

Why farm it

Green Mushroom is probably the first monster in the game with a recognizable jackpot item.

Historic jackpot: Pan Lid

Older drop data associates the Pan Lid with Green Mushroom.

The Classic World version is:

  • Lv.10
  • 7 upgrade slots
  • usable by anyone
  • 44 base Weapon Defence

Historically the Pan Lid became one of old MapleStory's most recognizable early rare drops. Players on old classic servers still specifically remember hunting their first one from Green Mushrooms.

But don't overestimate it

The Pan Lid should have strong nostalgia and first-week value, but I would not expect it to remain a top-end item forever.

It is much more likely to behave like:

rare early trophy → useful starter shield → collector/nostalgia item

rather than a permanent multi-million-meso endgame item.

More importantly: Green Mushroom Caps

Do not NPC all of them.

Green Mushroom Caps are currently required by:

  • 6 quests
  • multiple Leatherworking recipes

For example, Leatherworking requires them for Green Diros and Green Marker.

Expected market

Launch: High Later: Medium Jackpot: Pan Lid

Level 10–20

Pigs & Ribbon Pigs

These are less exciting than a Pan Lid farm, but potentially much better for consistent launch income.

Ribbon Pig historically drops:

  • Leather
  • Stiff Feather
  • Mithril Ore
  • Amethyst Ore

and normal Pig historically includes:

  • Leather
  • Gold Ore
  • Topaz Ore
  • Garnier

Why Leather matters

Leather can be converted through Leatherworking:

5 Leather → 1 Processed Leather

Processed Leather feeds a huge number of crafting recipes.

Prediction

During the first week:

Leather may be worth more to another player than most random equipment drops.

Players will be leveling crafting at the same time they are leveling characters.

Keep

  • Leather
  • Mithril Ore
  • Gold Ore
  • Topaz
  • Amethyst
  • Stiff Feather

Expected market

Launch: Very High Later: Medium Risk: Low

Stirge - One of the Best Early Farms

Best maps

Transfer Area

38 Stirges

Dangerous Steam

38

Dark Cave

35

Stirge is Lv.20 and provides very dense spawns.

Valuable drops

Historically:

  • Work Gloves
  • Stirge Wing
  • Stiff Feather
  • Garnet Ore
  • Ryden

Why Work Gloves matter

Classic World's Work Gloves have:

  • 5 upgrade slots
  • no class restriction
  • access to Attack scrolls
  • Magic Attack scrolls
  • Crit Rate scrolls

They can also be crafted, meaning they will not be unbelievably rare, but they should remain one of the most recognizable scrolling bases in the early economy.

Stirge Wings

Leatherworking consumes Stirge Wings in multiple recipes.

For example:

Black Duo

requires:

  • Processed Leather
  • 15 Stirge Wings
  • Spool of Thread

and Dark Mischief consumes 20 Stirge Wings.

Prediction

Stirge may be one of the best EXP + money + crafting-material farms available around Lv.20.

Expected market

Work Gloves: ★★★★★ Stirge Wings: ★★★★ Garnet Ore: ★★★★

Level 20–27

Nothing under this heading yet.

Jr. Necki - Crafting Material Farm

Jr. Necki is particularly interesting because Classic crafting creates additional demand that didn't exist in exactly the same form in old MapleStory.

Swamp of Despair III

Important drop: Jr. Necki Skin

Leatherworking Lv.4 can convert:

10 Jr. Necki Skin → Processed Leather

Jr. Necki also historically drops:

  • Mithril Ore
  • Topaz Ore

Why this matters

Processed Leather feeds equipment across multiple crafting levels.

This means Jr. Necki Skin shouldn't be viewed as normal ETC trash.

Prediction

This should be one of the strongest low-risk launch materials.

Not a lottery item.

Instead:

kill thousands → accumulate stacks → sell to crafters.

Expected market

Launch: ★★★★★ Long term: ★★★

Level 20–30

Nothing under this heading yet.

Zombie Mushroom / Horny Mushroom

These are primarily great because of density.

Zombie Mushroom

Ant Tunnel III

61 Zombie Mushrooms

That is an extremely dense Classic World spawn.

Historical drops include:

  • Mithril Ore
  • Emerald Ore
  • Mithril Wand
  • various equipment

Horny Mushroom

Ant Tunnel IV

41 Horny Mushrooms

Historical notable drops include:

  • Bronze Ore
  • Topaz Ore
  • Eagle Crow
  • Mithril Pole Arm
  • Steel Shield

Who benefits most?

Cleric becomes particularly efficient against Zombie Mushrooms because they are undead and Holy-weak.

Verdict

Not necessarily the biggest jackpot.

But:

great EXP + huge kill volume + lots of chances at materials/equipment.

Level 25–35

Nothing under this heading yet.

Wild Boar

Best maps

Land of Wild Boar

Valuable drops

Historically:

  • Leather
  • Adamantium Ore
  • Opal Ore
  • Stiff Feather
  • Mithril Guards
  • Lionheart
  • Nakamaki

Leather alone makes this substantially more interesting after the introduction of Classic crafting.

Additional demand

Wild Boars are also involved in profession progression, so launch demand may be stronger than old GMS alone suggests.

Verdict

Excellent general-purpose farming monster.

Low jackpot potential, good average value.

Level 28–38

Nothing under this heading yet.

Iron Hog

Best map

Pig Park II

22 Iron Hogs with normal 7.56s respawns.

Important: Iron Hog's Metal Hoof

Historically Iron Hogs drop Metal Hooves, and Classic crafting gives the material a second use: Weaponcrafting Lv.5 turns 10 of them into 3 Screws, and Screws feed a large part of the wider crafting ecosystem.

Check this before you commit a night to it. The hoof is in the item data and the Weaponcrafting recipe consuming it is real, but no monster in the current snapshot's drop table drops one, Iron Hog included. The drop tables are server-side and this one is older reference data, so the historical association may well hold at launch. It is not something this site can currently show you, and the Iron Hog page will not list the hoof.

Other historic drops

Pig Park II's historical table includes:

  • Adamantium Ore
  • Sapphire Ore
  • Halfmoon Zamadar
  • Mithril Guards
  • various Lv.30+ equipment

Prediction

Metal Hooves could experience sharp demand spikes when the main player population reaches the crafting levels that consume them.

Expected market

First few days: Medium Crafting wave: Very High

Level 30–42

Nothing under this heading yet.

Fire Boar - One of the Best Historic Jackpot Farms

Best maps

Burnt Land V

26 Fire Boars

Burnt Land III

24

Dangerous Valley

21

Historical jackpot drops

Fire Boar historically carries:

Kumbi Throwing Stars

Wolbi Throwing Stars

along with:

  • Leather
  • Garnet Ore
  • Diamond Ore
  • Korean Fan
  • Ryden
  • Heckler
  • Silver Guardian

Classic historical guides also repeatedly identify Fire Boar as one of the places players farmed throwing stars.

Why Kumbi matters

Throwing stars historically hold unusually good liquidity because Assassin players need multiple sets, not just one item.

That gives stars something most weapons don't have:

repeat buyers from the same player.

Prediction

If Assassin is highly populated at launch:

Fire Boar could be among the best Lv.30-ish jackpot farms.

Expected market

Kumbi: ★★★★ Wolbi: ★★★ Leather: ★★★★ Diamond Ore: ★★★★

Level 35–45

Evil Eye / Curse Eye

Evil Eye density

38

Cave of Evil Eye II

  • Silver Ore
  • Sapphire Ore
  • equipment
  • Cutlus

Curse Eye

Historical data shows:

  • Orihalcon Ore
  • Topaz Ore
  • multiple Lv.30–40 equips

Old classic-era sources also associate Curse Eyes with useful weapon scrolls depending on server/version.

Verdict

Good grinding income rather than a primary jackpot hunt.

Keep the ores.

Do not automatically NPC every Tail.

Level 38–50

Nothing under this heading yet.

Zombie Lupin - Excellent Mid-Game Farm

Zombie Lupin is Lv.41.

Best maps

Monkey Swamp III

31

Monkey Forest I

26

Monkey Forest II

Historical rare equipment

Zombie Lupin's older table includes some very interesting items:

  • Red Whip
  • Shinkita
  • Arc Staff
  • Blood Avarice
  • Purple Avenger
  • Silver Crow
  • The Nine Dragons

plus:

  • Orihalcon Ore
  • Amethyst Ore
  • Cursed Doll

Why the weapons may matter

Once players leave the early NPC weapon ladder, many class upgrades become:

drop → crafting → player market

instead of just “go to NPC and buy it.”

That means desirable weapons around Lv.40+ can command disproportionately high prices during the first progression wave.

Expected market

Rare good-stat weapon: ★★★★★ Cursed Doll stack: ★★★★ during quest wave Ore: ★★★

Level 40–50

Nothing under this heading yet.

Cold Eye

Cold Eye is Lv.40.

Best map

Tunnel That Lost Light I

32

Other useful maps contain 20+ Cold Eyes.

Jackpot

Historic table:

Mokbi Throwing Stars

plus:

  • Gold Ore
  • Lv.30–40 equipment
  • multiple Thief/Bowman/Mage items

Mokbi isn't an endgame star.

But around the time Assassin players are replacing their earliest stars, it can still be very liquid.

Level 45–55

Nothing under this heading yet.

Wraith - Materials + Quest Demand

Wraith has historically been one of those monsters where the rare drop is not the only reason to farm.

Classic World's Lv.46 Flying Medicine quest requires:

50 Medicine With Weird Vibes

and MapleStory Quest associates those with Wraith. The same quest also wants 20 Witchgrass Leaf, so a buyer working through it needs more than your stack alone.

Historically Wraith also dropped:

  • Dark Crystal Ore
  • Garnet Ore
  • Red Whip and other gear depending on the version.

Dark Crystal

Dark Crystal has historically been one of the rarer ore families, and classic-era data associates Wraith with it.

Best strategy

When the bulk of players approach Lv.46:

sell Medicine With Weird Vibes in quest-sized stacks of 50.

Convenience has value.

Level 45–58

Drake - Probably One of the Safest Mid-Game Farms

Drake is Lv.50.

Best maps

23

Tunnel That Lost Light I

20

Drake Hunting Ground

18

Valuable normal drops

Historically:

  • Dragon Skin
  • Gold Ore
  • Diamond Ore
  • Lv.40-ish equipment

Dragon Skin matters beyond its NPC value.

Jane's Final Challenge

The current pre-launch quest data requires:

  • 100 Dark Axe Stump kills
  • 50 Drake kills
  • 20 Dragon Skins
  • Moon Rock
  • 10 Sap of Ancient Tree

The reward can include:

  • Gloves Attack Scroll
  • Gloves Magic Attack Scroll

in Greater or Intermediate variants.

That means Dragon Skins effectively sit upstream of an attack-scroll quest.

Prediction

When players reach Lv.44+:

Dragon Skin demand could increase sharply.

Selling strategy

Don't only list:

1 Dragon Skin

Try:

20 Dragon Skins

because that completes the requirement immediately.

Level 55–65

Stone Golem

Stone Golem is Lv.56.

Best Classic maps

Golem's Temple III

10

Golem's Temple I

9

Golem's Temple IV

8

The spawn density is much lower than Ant Tunnel, but each kill can have much better potential value.

Historical valuable drops

Stone Golem historically carries:

Black Crystal Ore

Mokbi Throwing Stars

Kumbi Throwing Stars

plus numerous higher-level equips.

Why Black Crystal may become expensive

Classic Arcforge allows:

Black Crystal Ore → Black Crystal

and Black Crystal feeds higher crafting progression.

Black Crystal also has much broader relevance than a random class-specific equipment drop.

Prediction

Black Crystal Ore should be one of the safest higher-level materials to bank.

Expected value

Black Crystal Ore: ★★★★★ Kumbi: ★★★★ Mokbi: ★★★ Equipment: variable

Level 60–70

Wild Kargo - Tobi Farm

Wild Kargo is Lv.62.

Maps

Wild Kargo's Area

Tunnel That Lost Light II

The important drop

Tobi Throwing Stars

The historical MapleStory Quest table puts Tobi at 0.04% in the older dataset.

Do not assume that exact rate for Classic World.

But the item association itself makes Wild Kargo extremely important to watch after launch.

Dark Stone Golem is the cheaper way in

Do not walk past Dark Stone Golem on the way here. It carries Tobi at the same 0.04%, it is Lv.58 rather than 62, and Sleepy Dungeon V holds 19 of them against Wild Kargo's best map of 13. It also drops Black Crystal Ore, Dark Crystal Ore and Ancient Scroll.

If you are chasing Tobi rather than training, that is a denser table four levels earlier.

Other useful drops include:

  • Black Crystal Ore
  • Gold Ore
  • high-level equipment

Why Tobi should be valuable

Throwing-star progression historically goes through recognizable tiers.

Assassins don't want only one set.

They want enough stars to train for long periods.

Tobi therefore has:

  • stat value
  • convenience value
  • repeat demand
  • high class popularity

Expected launch value

Very High

Especially while Ilbi/Steely supply is extremely low.

Level 70+

Nothing under this heading yet.

Tauromacis - Steely Lottery

Tauromacis is Lv.70 in the current client.

It has only small numbers per map, so this is not a high-density farming strategy.

Historical table includes:

Steely Throwing Knives

at 0.04% in the old reference data.

It also has high-level equipment such as:

  • The Judgement
  • Red Hinkel
  • Brown Scarab

Red Drake is the better Steely farm

Tauromacis is not the only route to a Steely, and it is not the best one. Red Drake carries Steely at the same 0.04%, sits ten levels lower at Lv.60, and Dangerous Valley II holds 17 of them against Tauromacis' four per map.

Red Drake respawns slower, at 20 to 60 seconds against Tauromacis' 7.56, so the gap is narrower than the raw counts suggest. It is still the denser farm, and you can start it a whole job advancement earlier.

Predicted Steely value

A recent Classic World community discussion speculated approximately 500k for Steely very early in the server, while acknowledging that prices could rise considerably as mesos enter the economy.

Do not use 500k as an official price.

The important lesson is:

Rare stars may initially be cheap in nominal mesos because nobody has mesos yet.

That creates a major decision:

Sell now because 500k changes your progression today, or hold because the same item may become worth several times more after inflation?

Boss Farming

Nothing under this heading yet.

Mushmom - Ilbi Lottery

Mushmom:

  • Lv.40 boss
  • one spawn
  • 3,600 second / 1 hour respawn in Someone Else's House.

Historical table includes:

Ilbi Throwing Stars

plus:

  • Fairy Wand
  • Steel Tower Shield
  • earrings

Expected Ilbi value

Ilbi has historically been one of old MapleStory's most recognizable high-value items.

For comparison:

A MapleLegends market thread in 2017 listed Ilbis around 3.9m per set, while an older discussion noted that Ilbis had previously been around 8m+ before increased supply pushed them down.

A current Classic World community discussion remembered old Classic-era Ilbi around 1.5m, while emphasizing that launch prices will move dramatically.

My prediction

Launch Day 1–3: deceptively cheap Weeks 1–4: rises strongly as meso supply grows Later: depends heavily on drop rate and Assassin population

If I dropped an Ilbi in the first hours of launch, I would not sell it to the first whisper unless the mesos immediately funded something much more profitable.

Zombie Mushmom

Zombie Mushmom is Lv.50 with a one-hour spawn timer.

Historical table contains:

Ilbi Throwing Stars

Hwabi Throwing Stars

along with:

  • Black Gaia Cape
  • Silver Ancient Shield
  • Cutlus

Prediction

Potentially one of Victoria Island's biggest pure jackpot targets if those star drops survive into live Classic.

Jr. Balrog

Jr. Balrog is now Lv.80 in the current COT2 data.

Historical drop reference includes:

Hwabi Throwing Stars

and many Lv.70 weapons:

  • Kandine
  • Evil Wings
  • Doombringer
  • Redemption
  • Brown Scarab
  • Red Hinkel
  • Golden River

plus Black Crystal.

Verdict

Not efficient “mesos/hour” farming for an average player.

This is a:

kill for a jackpot / prestige / rare equipment farm.

The Drops I Would Prioritize at Launch

S+ - Do not NPC

Premium throwing stars

  • Ilbi
  • Hwabi
  • Steely
  • Tobi

Attack-related scrolls

Anything involving:

  • Gloves Attack
  • Weapon Attack
  • Magic Attack
  • important offensive stats

has historically been among the most liquid scrolling categories on classic servers. MapleLegends players similarly identify attack, Magic Attack, INT, DEX and LUK-related scrolls as the types generally worth checking rather than vendoring.

S Tier - Almost always keep initially

  • Black Crystal Ore
  • Dark Crystal Ore
  • Work Gloves
  • Pan Lid
  • Diamond Ore
  • Mithril Ore
  • Orihalcon Ore
  • rare Lv.35+ weapons
  • rare shields

A Tier - Sell in stacks

  • Leather
  • Jr. Necki Skin
  • Stirge Wing
  • Green Mushroom Cap
  • Blue Mushroom Cap
  • Dragon Skin
  • Iron Hog's Metal Hoof
  • quest ETC items

These may produce more reliable income than praying for an Ilbi.

Best Farms by Goal

Best early consistent money

Stirge

Work Gloves + Garnet + crafting wings.

Jr. Necki

Processed Leather supply.

Pig / Ribbon Pig

Raw Leather.

Best Lv.25–40 balance

Fire Boar

You get:

  • throwing-star lottery
  • Leather
  • ores
  • useful equipment

while still killing a dense, reasonably weak mob.

Best Lv.40–50

Zombie Lupin

Better rare weapon pool.

Drake

Probably safer because of Dragon Skin + ore + quest demand.

Best Lv.55–70

Stone Golem

Black Crystal + stars.

Wild Kargo

Tobi + Black Crystal.

Best pure jackpot

Mushmom / Zombie Mushmom

Potential Ilbi/Hwabi.

But boss camping has enormous opportunity cost if you're sitting around doing nothing between spawns.

Don't Make This Mistake

A rare drop isn't automatically valuable

Ask:

  1. Does a popular class use it?
  2. Is it better than an NPC item?
  3. Can it be crafted cheaply?
  4. Is it needed for a quest?
  5. Is it used by crafting?
  6. Is it difficult to farm?
  7. Does one player need several of them?

Throwing stars answer almost all of those questions positively.

A random Lv.35 hat usually does not.

Launch Economy Timing

The same item can have completely different value depending on when you sell it.

Days 1–3

Everyone is poor.

Players need:

  • potions
  • weapons
  • crafting materials
  • basic equipment

Sell

  • Leather
  • skins
  • caps
  • common ores
  • quest materials

Consider holding

  • Ilbi
  • Steely
  • Tobi
  • great scrolls
  • unusually good equipment rolls

Week 1–2

More players reach:

  • 2nd Job
  • Lv.30–40 weapons
  • serious crafting levels
  • scrolling projects

Demand should increasingly move into:

  • Work Gloves
  • Screws/materials
  • better stars
  • weapon upgrades
  • Black Crystal
  • scrolling bases

Later Economy

As mesos accumulate, nominal prices normally rise.

A player in the current Classic community summarized the key trade-off well:

an early 1.5m may be more useful to you today than 10m months later.

So don't automatically hoard everything.

If selling a rare item lets you:

  • upgrade your weapon
  • level crafting
  • buy materials cheaply
  • improve farming speed

then selling early can still be the profitable decision.

Recommended Farming Route

Lv.10–16

Green Mushroom / Pigs

Farm:

Pan Lid chance + Caps + Leather.

Lv.17–23

Stirge

Farm:

Work Gloves + Wings + Garnet.

Lv.20–25

Jr. Necki / Zombie Mushroom

Farm:

Skins + Mithril + Emerald.

Lv.25–30

Wild Boar / Iron Hog

Farm:

Leather + Hooves + ores.

Lv.30–40

Fire Boar

Farm:

Kumbi / Wolbi lottery + Leather + Diamond.

Lv.40–50

Zombie Lupin / Cold Eye / Drake

Choose:

Zombie Lupin for rare weapons Cold Eye for stars Drake for Dragon Skin and consistent useful drops

Lv.50–60

Drake → Stone Golem

Transition into:

Black Crystal farming.

Lv.60–70

Wild Kargo

Primary jackpot:

Tobi

Lv.70+

Tauromacis / bosses

Primary jackpots:

Steely / Ilbi / Hwabi / rare weapons

Best Overall Profit Strategy

The strongest launch farmer probably won't spend every hour camping a boss.

Instead:

80% of your time

Farm dense monsters with valuable materials.

20% of your time

Take chances on high-value drops or bosses.

That gives you:

consistent income + jackpot potential

instead of finishing a six-hour session with nothing because Mushmom refused to drop Ilbis.

One Final Rule

Before selling any unusual item:

Search it on MapleStory Quest first.

Check:

  • every crafting recipe that consumes it
  • quests requiring it
  • equipment stats
  • upgrade slots
  • NPC sell price
  • monsters that historically drop it

A 100-meso NPC item can easily be worth far more to another player.
