Before you start

Crafting in MapleStory Classic World is a separate progression system with 6 disciplines, 348 recipes and crafting levels 1–10:

  • Smithing
  • Weaponcrafting
  • Tailoring
  • Woodcrafting
  • Leatherworking
  • Arcforge

This guide focuses on what actually matters: which professions to level, how to avoid wasting mesos, what materials to keep, what may be profitable at launch, and where to farm useful ingredients.

Important: Recipe requirements, crafting EXP, fees and map spawns below come from the current COT2/Beta 2 client data. Monster drop tables are server-side and are not confirmed for launch, so farming recommendations use known spawn locations plus older drop data as a guide rather than pretending the old drop rates are final.

Best overall starting profession: Smithing

Smithing is the most efficient profession based purely on crafting EXP versus bench fees.

Across the current recipe set:

DisciplineEXP per meso
Smithing0.051
Tailoring0.030
Leatherworking0.029
Weaponcrafting0.021
Woodcrafting0.016
Arcforge0.009

Arcforge costs roughly five times as much per crafting EXP as Smithing when looking only at bench fees.

That does not mean Smithing automatically makes the most money. Leveling efficiency and market profitability are different things.

The efficient crafting strategy

1. Don't rush all six professions

Early-game mesos are extremely valuable for potions, travel and equipment.

Crafting has mandatory bench fees, so dumping all your money into six professions immediately can slow your character progression badly.

During COT2, players specifically reported that some low-level crafted weapons were not economical compared with simply purchasing the equipment from an NPC.

Recommended order

Early game

  1. Unlock crafting.
  2. Start Smithing/refining useful materials.
  3. Unlock the basic component recipes you actually need.
  4. Level your main class-related profession.

Around crafting level 5

  1. Complete your profession's catalyst milestone.
  2. Start watching the player market before mass-crafting anything.

Later

  1. Level Arcforge if you want to participate in the scroll market.
  2. Push expensive professions only when their next recipes have real demand.

Materials you should NOT NPC

This is probably the most important crafting rule.

S-Tier materials

Screws

One of the safest materials to keep or sell to other players.

Screws are currently used by 142 crafting recipes and 4 quests, more than any other component in the recipe set.

They can be produced through Weaponcrafting from:

  • Bronze Ingot + Iron Ingot at crafting level 1
  • Iron Hog's Metal Hoof at crafting level 5

They are required across several professions, not just Weaponcrafting.

Launch prediction: Very high demand.

Spool of Thread

Tailoring level 1 converts an Animal Fur Bundle into a Spool of Thread.

Thread is used in 82 recipes and is also required by a crafting quest.

Leatherworking and Tailoring consume large amounts of it.

Launch prediction: Very high demand, especially while players are leveling Tailoring and Leatherworking.

Processed Leather

Processed Leather is currently required by 101 recipes.

It can be produced from:

  • Lv.1: 5 Leather
  • Lv.4: 10 Jr. Necki Skin
  • Lv.6: 10 Ligator Skin
  • Lv.9: 10 Croco Skin

That gives Leatherworkers several different farming routes as they progress.

Launch prediction: Excellent bulk-selling material.

Ingots

Do not casually NPC ores or ingots.

Smithing feeds several other professions, which makes metal supply one of the most important parts of the crafting economy.

Particularly useful materials include:

Bronze, Iron, Mithril, Silver, Gold and Orihalcon Ingots.

Mithril becomes especially important because many higher-level weapons and armor pieces consume it.

Gems and Black Crystal

Arcforge converts ores into crafting gems.

Keep:

Garnet, Topaz, Emerald, Sapphire, Aquamarine, Amethyst, Diamond and Black Crystal.

Black Crystal becomes especially interesting later because current Arcforge recipes use it for several stat scrolls and the Gloves Crit. Rate Scroll: Lesser.

Best way to level each profession

These are good recipe paths when focusing on bench-fee efficiency. Ingredient prices can completely change which recipe is actually cheapest on the live server.

Smithing

Bronze Ingot → Steel Helmet → Yellow Metal Gear → Steel Football Helmet → Mithril Sharp Helm → Steel Pride → Great Red Helmet → Mithril Nordic Helm → Silver Crusader Helm

Best profession for cheap crafting EXP.

Weaponcrafting

Steel Pipe → Saw → Mithril Titans → Steel Igor → Monkey Wrench → Mithril Guards → Silver Guardian → Gephart → Blood Avarice → Blood Slain

The later upgrade recipes become dramatically more efficient than many of the early weapons.

Tailoring

Red Bandana → Brown Apprentice Hat → Lemona → Ice Jeans → Red Starry Bandana → Red Magic Shoes → Red Salt Shoes → Red Moon Shoes → Processed Cloth → Pink Goldwind Shoes

Leatherworking

Brown Skullcap → Brown Winter Hat → Basic Archer Gloves → Blue Diros → Red Lappy Boots → Black Hunter Boots → Blue White-Lined Boots → Black Red-Lined Shoes → Processed Leather → Red Goni Shoes

Woodcrafting

Processed Wood → Hardwood Wand → Old Wooden Staff → Plunger → Ryden → Red Viper → Vaulter 2000 → Silver Crow → Olympus

Arcforge

Garnet → Processed Parchment → Sapphire Staff → Metal Wand → Ice Wand → Mithril Wand → Wizard Wand → Fairy Wand → Arc Staff → Cromi

Do not level Arcforge by blindly producing scrolls. Most current Arcforge scroll recipes charge a 10,000 meso bench fee, making them poor EXP training recipes unless the finished scroll itself has market value.

Crafting level 5: don't miss these quests

At character level 25 and crafting level 5, each profession has an important progression quest.

ProfessionImportant requirementReward
SmithingCraft Orihalcon + Gold IngotArmor Crafting Catalyst
WeaponcraftingCraft Monkey Wrench + defeat Iron HogsOne-Handed Weapon Crafting Catalyst
TailoringCraft Red Starry Bandana + defeat Wild BoarsArmor Crafting Catalyst
WoodcraftingCraft The Red Relaxer + defeat Dark Axe StumpsTwo-Handed Weapon Crafting Catalyst
LeatherworkingCraft Red Chair + defeat Wild BoarsArmor Crafting Catalyst
ArcforgeArcforge Lv.5 questScroll Crafting Catalyst

Catalysts can alter crafted equipment stats, while the Scroll Crafting Catalyst can produce a stronger scroll result.

Profit opportunity

When large numbers of players approach crafting level 5, don't only sell the finished quest item.

Sell the ingredients required to craft it.

For example, Weaponcrafters working toward their milestone need materials for a Monkey Wrench. Players still need to perform the craft themselves, so supplying the ingredients is safer than betting on finished quest items.

Best launch profit opportunities

These are predictions, not guaranteed prices.

Tier S: crafting components

1. Screws

Probably one of the safest launch commodities because so many recipes consume them.

2. Spool of Thread

Massive Tailoring + Leatherworking demand.

3. Processed Leather

Used in 101 recipes and scalable through several monster materials.

4. Ingots

Especially Iron, Mithril, Silver, Gold and Orihalcon.

5. Processed Wood

Bow, crossbow, staff and other Woodcrafting demand makes this a useful bulk component.

Why components should win early

At launch, thousands of players will be trying to increase crafting levels simultaneously.

Instead of guessing which individual helmet or weapon will sell, selling the common material used by multiple recipes lets you profit from everyone else's crafting grind.

COT2 players already discussed selling crafting materials rather than investing heavily into every profession themselves.

High-potential finished items

Lv.30+ weapons

This is where crafted weapons become much more interesting.

Low-level gear is often easy to buy from NPCs. As players progress, specific weapons become harder to find and more expensive.

That creates an opportunity to craft weapons below NPC price but above your material cost.

For example, players in COT2 specifically reported that crafting became more useful around level 30+ when NPC weapon prices increased or a particular weapon was difficult to obtain.

Watch especially:

  • Ryden
  • Eagle Crow
  • class-specific Lv.30–50 weapons
  • rare weapon types with low player supply

Do not mass-produce them. Craft according to actual demand.

Arcforge: probably the strongest long-term market

Arcforge is expensive to level, but it has something the other professions don't:

repeatable demand from scrolling equipment.

Current recipes include:

  • Shoes Jump Scroll
  • Shoes Speed Scroll
  • Earring DEX / INT / LUK / STR Scrolls
  • Gloves Accuracy Scroll
  • Gloves Crit. Rate Scroll
  • Cape DEX / INT / LUK / STR Scrolls

Most cost 10,000 mesos to craft before ingredients.

Prediction

Arcforge may be mediocre for early-game EXP but one of the best professions for late-market profit.

Players eventually stop buying low-level armor.

They do not necessarily stop scrolling new or replacement equipment.

This creates repeat customers.

Materials to stockpile for Arcforge

  • Fragment of Magic
  • Processed Parchment
  • Garnet
  • Topaz
  • Emerald
  • Sapphire
  • Aquamarine
  • Amethyst
  • Black Crystal
  • Diamond

Black Crystal in particular should be watched closely.

Farming routes for crafting materials

These locations use the current client spawn tables. The listed drops are based on older MapleStory data until Classic World's server-side drops are confirmed.

Tree Branches / early Woodcrafting

Target: Stump

Good maps:

  • The Tree That Grew II - 28 Stumps
  • The Tree That Grew III - 27
  • The Field South of Ellinia - 27
  • West Rocky Mountain I - 27

Older data lists Tree Branch as a common Stump drop.

Good for: early Woodcrafting and Vicious' crafting progression.

Stirge Wings

Target: Stirge

Best current maps:

  • Transfer Area - 38 Stirges
  • Dangerous Steam - 38
  • Dark Cave - 35
  • Line 1 Area 2 - 21

Stirge Wings appear in multiple Leatherworking recipes. Older data also associates Stirges with Stiff Feather and Garnet Ore.

Excellent combined farming target.

Jr. Necki Skin

Target: Jr. Necki

Best current maps:

  • Dangerous Croko I - 27
  • Dangerous Croko II - 21
  • Swamp of Despair III - 19
  • Line 2 Area 2 - 18

Processed Leather can directly use 10 Jr. Necki Skins at Leatherworking Lv.4. Older drop data also associates Jr. Necki with Mithril Ore and Topaz Ore.

This may become one of the better crafting farms around the early 20s.

Blue Mushroom Caps

Target: Blue Mushroom

Best current maps:

  • The Blue Mushroom Forest - 16
  • The Breathing Rock - 12
  • Entrance of Golem's Temple - 12
  • Road to the Dungeon - 11

Blue Mushroom Caps are directly used in recipes such as Basic Archer Gloves and Metal Wand. Older data also lists Gold Ore and Sapphire Ore from Blue Mushrooms.

This gives the farm potential value across multiple professions.

Iron Hog materials

Target: Iron Hog

Pig Park II has 22 Iron Hog spawns.

Iron Hog's Metal Hoof can be converted into Screws at Weaponcrafting Lv.5, and Weaponcrafters also have to defeat Iron Hogs for their Lv.5 profession milestone.

Expect this area to be competitive around launch.

Curse Eye Tails

Target: Curse Eye

Best current maps:

  • Sleepy Dungeon V - 24
  • Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North IX - 20
  • Hunting Ground in the Deep Forest II - 20
  • Sleepy Dungeon III - 19

Curse Eye Tails are useful for crafting and quests. Older data also associates Curse Eyes with Orihalcon Ore and Topaz Ore.

This makes Curse Eyes a potentially efficient later multi-purpose farm.

The launch crafting money strategy

First days

Sell materials.

Players racing crafting levels will pay for convenience.

Prioritize:

Screws → Thread → Leather → Ingots → Wood → Gems.

Once players reach Lv.25–40

Shift toward:

  • profession milestone materials
  • Lv.30+ weapons
  • hard-to-find class equipment
  • catalyst-worthy crafts

Once scrolling becomes common

Shift toward:

  • Arcforge materials
  • Processed Parchment
  • Fragment of Magic
  • Black Crystal
  • stat scrolls
  • Crit / movement-related scrolls

How to know whether a recipe is actually profitable

Do not calculate:

NPC sale price − crafting fee

That ignores the value of every ingredient.

MapleStory Quest's current “profitable” crafting table intentionally treats ingredients as having zero market value, so it should not be interpreted as guaranteed player-market profit.

Use:

Expected profit = Player sale price − bench fee − value of all ingredients

Even materials you farm yourself have value because you could have sold them to another player.

Example

If a weapon sells for 25,000 mesos:

  • Crafting fee: 6,500
  • Materials could sell individually for 12,000

Your real cost is approximately:

18,500 mesos

Real profit:

6,500 mesos

Not 18,500.

This one calculation will prevent most crafting losses.

Final recommendations

Best early profession: Smithing Best generic materials to sell: Screws, Thread, Processed Leather and Ingots Best profession for long-term market potential: Arcforge Best strategy for most players: level the profession that supports your class and buy services/materials from other crafters Worst strategy: spending all your launch mesos trying to max every crafting profession immediately Best launch money strategy: sell materials to the players doing exactly that

The crafting economy will change quickly after launch. Early demand should heavily favor progression materials; later demand should move toward rarer equipment, scrolls and catalyst-enhanced crafting.
